Sleepers for raised beds, borders and steps
Sleepers are the quickest way to build a bed that lasts: no frame, no fixings to hide, just heavy timber stacked to the height you want.
Counting sleepers
Measure the outline of each bed. Each layer needs enough sleepers to go round it, and each layer laid on its side adds 100mm of height. Stagger the joints between layers so the corners lock together.
For long borders, the 3m and 3.6m sleepers mean fewer joins along the edge.
Example beds, one layer
| Bed size | Sleepers per layer |
|---|---|
| 2.4m x 1.2m | Two 2.4m and two 1.2m |
| 3.6m x 1.2m | Two 3.6m and two 1.2m |
| 2.4m x 2.4m | Four 2.4m |
